We saw a few strange things in Dublin, Ohio. which should not have been surprising.
The Field of Corn may be one of the strangest things I have ever seen. It is 109 concrete ears of corn, each standing upright, and each about 6 feet tall. The site was originally a cornfield and donated to the City of Dublin by the farmer. The farmer, Sam Frantz, was also the inventor of several hybrid corn species. The Dublin Arts Council commissioned the project as an honor to Frantz and to remind folks, in this now urban area, of its agricultural heritage.
There may indeed be an historical and artistic purpose for the Field of Corn. It is, nevertheless, quite weird.
We did a book and storytelling tour in Idaho, but we didn’t see the world’s largest potato there. We saw it, instead, in Dublin, Ohio at the Irish festival. The potato may or may not be real (the Idaho Potato Commission ordinarily refuses to say, but did make a confession on its website). Real or not, the potato weighs four tons and travels the country promoting Idaho potatoes.
Jeopardy question:
Answer: It could make 20,217 servings of mashed potatoes OR over a million average-sized French fries.
Question: What could you do with the world’s largest potato (assuming it is real).
In between our tour of the Field of Corn and gawking at the world’s largest potato, ClanDonnell did try to sell a few books.
