Irish Culture Club of Delaware

Finn McCool’s Irish Pub in Newark

The Irish Culture Club of Delaware was foolish enough to invite ClanDonnell to tell the club some tales of Ireland. They were even more foolish when the picked the setting – Finn McCool’s Irish Pub. We’ll be going straight to the bar once the stories have wrapped up.

We talked about Ireland’s Great Hunger, trying to answer the questions “Why Did It Happen?” and “Why Are There So Many Irish-Americans?” We spoke for over an hour on this dire subject, but one that Irish-Americans yearn to learn more about. It explains the catastrophe which befell their Irish ancestors, and tells why so many of them left for America.

Apropos to the topic, patrons brought with them non-perishable food, which the club will collect for its May food drive.

This is Finn McCool’s description of the event:

Join us on May 1 at 7pm as we welcome Irish-American storyteller David McDonnell to Finn’s. Don’t expect a dry history lecture. McDonnell will entertain and enlighten as he tells us about the Great Hunger – its impact on the Irish and on our families – in his own crisp, witty style. An author and storyteller, McDonnell has entertained listeners in the US and Ireland alike. At the end, you’ll understand more about why there are so many Irish in America.

And this is the description of the event by the Irish Culture Club of Delaware:

Join us on May 1 as we begin our month of commemoration to all those impacted by the Great Hunger, an Gorta Mor.

We begin with Irish storyteller David McDonnell. David tells us—in his own witty and intriguing way—the story of an Gorta Mor.
