The Mellow Show
We returned virtually to Madrid, New Mexico on St. Paddy’s Day 2024. Told some tales on the Mellow Show, KMRD Radio.
The station is at 96.9 FM with internet streaming. It boasts that it is free form, commercial free community radio. The Mellow Show is Friday’s from 8:00 to 10:00 am, hosted by local celebrity (and my brother) Dale McDonnell.
If you’ve never been to Madrid, you should. It’s an old coal mining town in Santa Fe County on the Turquoise Trail connecting Albuquerque to Santa Fe. It almost became a ghost town after the mine closed in the 1950’s. It’s now home to a few hundred people with art galleries, eclectic shops, and taverns making it a brilliant spot to visit anytime.
The town was presumably named after the capital of Spain, but do not pronounce it the way Spaniards do. Locals pronounce it MAA-drid.
Dale featured two hours of Irish music, interspersed with some stories by ClanDonnell. One of which was my tale of St. Brendan, the first European (maybe?) to reach North America. You can read my bit on Brendan at this link.
The image at the top of the page is of my favorite license plate. It reminds folks that New Mexico is one of the fifty states. Amazingly, not everyone in the other 49 are aware of that.
