San Antonio, Texas
We stopped by Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub while on the River Walk. Waxy’s place is literally on the River Walk, which is, by the way, one of the neatest places in North America.
The River Walk is a network of walkways along the San Antonio River. Downtown, it is about five miles long and one story below the street level. The walk covers both banks of the river with several pedestrian bridges. The walk is lined with shops, restaurants, and pubs, one of which is Waxy O’Connors.
We might have stopped at Waxy O’Connors anyway since it is, after all, an Irish pub. But we were headed that way for the music – we wanted to hear resident entertainer Joe Walmsley. It was well worth it and we went back a second night!
We were not invited to tell stories there. But we told them anyway. Since that is what I do.
As an aside, when I first met Joe Walmsley, I learned that he was from Liverpool. So I said, naively, “I hear you are from England.”
Joe answered, in his gravelly voice and an indignant tone:
“I’m not from England. I’m from Liverpool”.
